The east-London district of West Ham is currently being regenerated along with other areas in Newham borough, which is preparing to host the 2012 Olympics. West Ham is close to Stratford, home of the new Olympic Stadium, but it also provides easy access to the world-class attractions of central London. Locally, the Green Flag-winning West Ham Park is a much-loved open space, attracting a million visitors a year. In 2005, it was voted Best Park in the South East in a nationwide competition, making an impression with its 77 acres of gardens and recreation grounds as well as sports facilities, guided tours, bandstand entertainment, a plant nursery and reassuring safety features.
