This town in Gwent was the birthplace of the National Health Service as it was here, in Tredegar, that Aneurin Bevan was born in 1897 leaving school at the age of 13 to work in the local mines and by the age of 19 the politically aware Aneurin Bevan was chairman of the local lodge of the South Wales Miners Federation before embarking on his career in politics. Tredegar really started to develop as a town from around the early 1800’s and it was at this time that the Tredegar Iron Company was founded and this ensured the economic success of the town through the 19th century.
