Tooting's reputation is literally out of this world! The busy south-London suburb has recently had a crater on Mars called after it: Tooting Crater was named by a planetary scientist working in Hawaii, in honour of his English hometown. Tooting was previously famous as the location of the BBC's 1970s sitcom "Citizen Smith", whose central character, a hopeless revolutionary, demanded "Freedom for Tooting". At the heart of Tooting is the vast green expanse of Tooting Common, created from two existing stretches of land - Tooting Bec Common, which boasts an open-air freshwater lido, and Tooting Graveney Common, hosting an athletics stadium.
