Studland is situated on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. It is famous for its three beaches, South Beach, Middle Beach and Knoll Beach. Perhaps a part of the reason for the popularity of these beaches is that Studland is situated in a sheltered bay that is protected from the prevailing winds. At the south end of the bay are reddened sandstone cliffs and at the north end of the bay the cliffs are of Reading and London clay. The sandy beach has formed against this backdrop over a period of some 600 years.
