Stokenchurch is on the A40, a mile from junction 5 of the M40 (cutting the village in half), in the Chiltern Hills of Buckinghamshire (though prior to 1896 the village was in Oxfordshire!). The now largely residential village, originated as a stopping point on the main road to London for stage coaches, hence the previously large number of pubs and inns! Stokenchurch was also the centre for chair making, using locally felled wood. Here is one of the few places in GB where Red Kites can regularly be seen and the Stokenchurch Gap is a man-made wonder of the modren age! Once the main route between Oxford and London, it scales the steep slopes of the Chilterns.
