Staverton lies 4 miles north-west of Gloucester. The land has been used mainly for arable farming and the greater part of it lay in open fields until enclosure in 1803, the Manor was owned by Deerhurst Priory until the Dissolution after which the land was held by mainly freeholders; it was said to be good for corn but not for meadow. Orchards were a prominent feature around the houses but by the 1960`s most were no longer in cultivation. Part of the village was called Reynolds Tenements in 1387. The road running north-east to Cheltenham existed by the C14th for by 1325 a bridge had been built over the Hatherley Brook to replace the ford.
