Southend on Sea is a resort roughly 40 miles east of central London in Essex. Towns within the Borough include Chalkwell, Eastwood, Leigh-on-Sea, Prittlewell, Shoeburyness, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay, Westcliff-on-Sea and their respective beaches. On the seafront, Southend Pier is the longest iron pleasure pier in the world measuring 1.33 miles to the end. From the Pier, the sand/shingle Jubilee Beach stretches eastwards through to Thorpe Bay. The Pier Museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of this famous landmark - including its many disasters.
