Silloth (sometimes called Silloth-on-Solway) stands at the north west corner of Cumbria, looking across the Solway Firth to Galloway. For most of its history Silloth was just a small village, taking its name from the sea ‘lathes’ (barns) built by the monks of nearby Holme Cultran Abbey to store their wool. The Silloth seen today though is the creation of the Victorians. The town developed in the mid-19th century in two ways: as a port, and as a seaside resort. The development was planned with some sensitivity, the town benefiting from a large area of park known as The Green built between the sea-front and the main area of building.
