This small town in Shropshire can trace its roots back to Saxon times, this despite the fact that there is a Roman road close by however there is no evidence that the town was occupied by the Romans. Shifnal has never been known as an industrial location, indeed its growth and prosperity was based on the town being a staging post, in the 18th century, when stagecoaches and mailcoaches travelled between London, Shrewsbury and Holyhead. This however was shortlived with the coming of the railways in the mid 19th century and it soon once again became a small market town.
