Scarborough has history aplenty behind it - a Roman signalling station; Viking settlement and destruction of the town; Civil War sieges; and of course the medieval fair that has spread the town's name worldwide via the folksong recalling it. But above all it is a seaside resort of some splendour. As a resort Scarborough was first developed because of its acidic springs that saw a spa grow in the town in the 17th century. To complement the waters taken internally visitors began to enjoy them externally in bathing from the town's lovely beaches.
