Sanquhar is a historic market town in the Nith Valley in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland situated on the River Nith, 26 miles north-west of Dumfries nestled between Thornhill and Moffat. Sanquhar received its royal burgh status in 1598. The name Sanquhar comes from the Celtic meaning â€˜Old Fortâ€™, artefacts uncovered in the area date back to the Neolithic period, settlers have been recorded here from the 9th century and there are remains of Roman fortifications. Robert Burns, Scotlandâ€™s National Poet, was a frequent visitor to the Queensberry Arms in the High Street c1788.
