Sanquhar is a historic market town in the Nith Valley in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland situated on the River Nith, 26 miles north-west of Dumfries nestled between Thornhill and Moffat. Sanquhar received its royal burgh status in 1598. The name Sanquhar comes from the Celtic meaning ‘Old Fort’, artefacts uncovered in the area date back to the Neolithic period, settlers have been recorded here from the 9th century and there are remains of Roman fortifications. Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Poet, was a frequent visitor to the Queensberry Arms in the High Street c1788.
