If you travel from Nottingham on the A614 towards the A1(M), you will pass through Rufford just before you reach Ollerton. Rather than pass through, however, perhaps you should consider tarrying for a while to see what Rufford has to offer. If you don't stop you will be missing the Rufford Abbey Country Park. The present day park once formed part of a Cistercian Abbey dating back to the 12th century. In 1536 the Dissolution of the Monasteries led to its slow transformation into a country estate. It was first owned by the Talbot family, including Elizabethan aristocrat George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury.
