Rhayader is one of the oldest towns in mid Wales and dates back to the 5th Century although Neolithic remains have been identified in the area indicating that there was a settlement there prior to that. The town lies in the very heart of Wales almost midway between Hereford and Aberystwyth and between the two most visually exciting ranges of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons in the Upper Wye Valley and surrounded by hills. Today with a population of around 2,00 people Rhayader remains a firm favourite with local residents and visitors alike, a popular tourist location for the variety of outdoor activities that are on offer, from fishing on the River Wye or at the Elan Valley Lakes, to walks and mountain biking in the surrounding hills which provide some of the most beautiful views around.
