The West Yorkshire market town of Pudsey, mentioned in the Domesday Book as Podechesai, sits between Leeds and Bradford, and until 1974 when it was incorporated in the Leeds metropolitan district, it retained its independence of both. The town still to this day provides a noticeable break between Leeds and Bradford, a green lung for them thanks in part to the Moravian settlement at Fulneck, one of the villages adjoining Pudsey. The Moravians, who arrived in the area in the mid-18th century, kept their lands free of industrial development.
