Dating back to Roman times, Portishead derives its name from 'port at the head of the river'. In fact the river water once came right up to the High Street and evidence can be seen on the old wall of where the boats would once have been moored. Over 5000 years ago the area was a marshy plain inhabited by Hippopotami and Elephants whose teeth have been excavated from time to time. The dominant architecture is Victorian, helping the town to retain much of its original charm. In 1836 a deep water dock was built to facilitate large ships involved in importing and exporting goods around the world.
