The town of Ponteland is located near to Newcastle Airport in Castle Morpeth, Northumberland, in northeast England. The river Pont, which joins the river Blyth further downstream, runs through the town and gives it its name, meaning island in the Pont, due to the area consisting of a small area of solid ground around St Mary’s Church and the old bridge, surrounded by marshland. This marshland is now drained with housing developments built upon it. A small castle was destroyed by the Scottish army under the Earl of Douglas the day before the Battle of Otterburn and is now the site of the Blackbird Inn, which is rumoured to be connected to St Mary’s church by an old tunnel behind the fireplace in the Tunnel Room.
