Plympton is a friendly little village with a lively community spirit hidden away to the East of Plymouth. It was first recorded in 904, its old English name meaning “Plum-Tree-Townâ€. The old part of the village is known as Plympton St Maurice, which used to be an important centre for the trade in locally mined tin. It was also a bustling port until the river silted up and the sea trade moved to Plymouth. Plympton has had many distinguished residents in the past. It was the birthplace of the world renowned artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, who was Lord Mayor and also Member of Parliament for the area.
