The highest market town in Yorkshire, Penistone was once a major transport hub, but it is now a far quieter place and none the worse for that. At one point Penistone was a junction between the Sheffield to Huddersfield line and the Woodhead line, taking passengers and freight between Manchester and Sheffield, and it even had engineering works to serve this traffic. If evidence in the local parish church, St John the Baptistâ€™s, is taken into consideration, Penistone was settled in Saxon times â€“ there are signs of a Saxon cross to be found in the church building.
