Oulton Broad is the most southerly of the Norfolk Broads, although somewhat confusingly it lies in Suffolk. It also gives its name to the village around it, these days running into much larger Lowestoft, but with a different feel to that town. Oulton village has a pre-war atmosphere, with its tranquil park, tea-rooms, and architecture. The life of Oulton Broad is inextricably linked with the water. The broad provides a route to the sea through a lock and Lake Lothing, and to the rest of the Broads network through Oulton Dyke and thence the River Waveney, one of the main thoroughfares of the Broads National Park.
