The large, pleasant village of Newick sits in the Sussex Weald south of Ashdown Forest (in days gone by the whole area was wooded) about 10 miles east of Haywards Heath. Newick pre-dates the Domesday Book (1086) although it is not recorded in it; known as Nywyke in 1296 it derives its name from the Old English `niwe -wic` = new farm. The village is situated mid-way between Winchester & Canterbury and made an ideal stopping off point, although the main pilgrim route is further to the north along the North Downs.
