Set in the steep valleys and folds of the Cotswolds, 3 miles south of Stroud, Nailsworth grew out of a series of scattered communities that lived alongside the brooks and streams that drain the from the hills and flow northward to meet the River Frome. By 1663 two main centres of settlement had been established; Lower Nailsworth, where the Avening and Horsley streams meet and Upper Nailsworth, further south where the old Tetbury road crossed the Horsley stream. Nailswoth owed it`s development almost entirely from the cloth making industry; although it`s history is much older, the Romans had built a Temple in the area.
