Market Weighton was granted its market charter in 1251, and still holds markets to this day, though now they are Friday events rather than on the Thursday specified in the charter. The settlement is far older than this, however, probably dating back into prehistory, when one it offered one of the few dry areas in the wetlands surrounding it. The town was originally called Wicstun, which probably means a farmstead on the way (weg), although it is possible that it might have meant a dairy farmstead.
