For a tiny village - its population is only 120 - Malham in the Craven district of North Yorkshire has a long list of attractions going for it. The village itself is a pretty one, stone cottages dotted along the lanes, a tiny bridge taking you over the beck, and very importantly a good pub. But it is what lies just beyond the village that brings in most visitors. A brisk walk takes you to Malham Tarn, the highest lake in England at 377m above sea-level. Pretty if not spectacular, the lake is home to a wide variety of birds feeding on it and around it, and beneath the surface there is thriving aquatic wildlife.
