Llantwit Major ( Llanilltud Fawr in Welsh) is a small coastal town in the Vale of Glamorgan approx 4 miles south–east of Cowbridge. Originally a Roman settlement, this was the site of St Illtud’s monastry, known, in the (5th, as a place of great scholarship and spirituality. Though no monastic remains are visible today, history is ever present within the narrow cobbled streets, with their quaint high walls and in the architecture of the medieval Town Hall. Archeologists will also find the ditches and earthworks of an Iron Age fort at nearby Colhugh beach.
