Langholm is a remote town in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland situated on the River Esk, 30 miles east of Dumfries on the road north into the Borders. Known as the â€˜Muckle Toonâ€™, Langholm received its burgh status in 1621.The â€˜newâ€™ Langholm town was founded and laid out as a grid-plan settlement by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1778 and it grew during the 19th century as a wool centre with several mills in production. Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid (1872-1978) was born in Langholm and there is a MacDiarmid trail out to the MacDiarmid Memorial (a large metal book) on the north-side of Whita Hill.
