Langholm is a remote town in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland situated on the River Esk, 30 miles east of Dumfries on the road north into the Borders. Known as the ‘Muckle Toon’, Langholm received its burgh status in 1621.The ‘new’ Langholm town was founded and laid out as a grid-plan settlement by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1778 and it grew during the 19th century as a wool centre with several mills in production. Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid (1872-1978) was born in Langholm and there is a MacDiarmid trail out to the MacDiarmid Memorial (a large metal book) on the north-side of Whita Hill.
