Irvine is an ancient burgh in North Ayrshire, Scotland, situated 12 miles north of Ayr and 7 miles west of Kilmarnock. Irvine was awarded its charter c1240 by Alexander II and c1308 Robert I granted Royal Burgh status recognising the townâ€™s people for their part during the Wars of Independence. Robert Burns lived in Irvine in 1781 to learn the flax-dressing trade. Irvine was once a harbour town and the main seaport for trade from Glasgow and Ireland from the 16th to the 18th century. Irvine has historically interesting buildings including the 14th century Seagate Castle and the Town House built in 1859 with its octagonal lantern.
