Ilford is a bustling suburb at the borders of east London and Essex. This former Saxon hamlet has an ancient history. Countless fossils of large animals have been excavated, famously the "Ilford Mammoth", with ten-feet tusks, now exhibited at the Natural History Museum. Ilford grew up with the railways, becoming a centre for manufacturing, service industries and major businesses. Dr Barnardo's girls' homes began in Ilford, and John Logie Baird experimented with his new invention - the TV - while living here.
