With a grand total of 1,180 residents at the last census Hawes is the capital of the Dales, centrally located within the National Park, and easy to get to via the A684 from the M6 to the west or the A1 to the east, though once off those arterial highways don’t expect to race there. The town’s name is said to mean the pass between the mountains, referring to Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, and at 850 feet it is the highest market town in the country. The town centre itself has not lost any charm, with grey stone cottages and grander buildings that once formed the backdrop for elements of the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, and there are plenty of small shops and places to eat for travellers to the area.
