At the edge of the Snowdonian foothills in Gwynedd in North Wales and on the edge of Cardiagn Bay lies the historic town of Harlech looking out westwards toward the Lleyn Peninsula. Famed for its medieval fortress built in the 13th century by Edward I as part of his “iron ring†of fortresses built to subdue the Welsh. Harlech Castle is situated high upon a rocky outcrop, its seaward side defended by sheer cliffs, while a deep moat protected the other sides and today it still provides and excellent viewpoint that dominates the town.
