Sixteen miles west of Hexham in Northumberland, lies the small village of Haltwhistle, on the A69 from Newcastle to Carlisle. Lying within a large ecclesiastical parish of the same name, the area has been populated since Roman times and the village itself is mentioned in the Domesday book as Haut Whysile which means â€˜high boundaryâ€™. The parish church Holy Cross has a 7th century water stoup, believed to have been used by St.Paulinus. William the Lion of Scotland apparently mentioned the church in a grant in 1178 to the Abbey of Arbroath.
