Halkyn, an ancient parish vilage of Flintshire, lies some 4 miles north of Mold on the B5123 close to the long ridge of the Halkyn mountains with spectacular views over the Dee & Mersey rivers to the Cumbrian mountains & Pennine hills.. This is an ancient lead mining area and the landscape is dotted with the remains of quarries some of which date to Roman times but do be careful walking about - there are many hidden mineshafts. There is a fine example of an Iron Age hill fort at Moel Y Gar less than two miles away and to the west is a section of C8thWat’s Dyke (similar to Offa’s but much shorter).
