Glastonbury is probably the most famous place in Somerset. It is famous for its history and mystery but possibly more so for the Glastonbury Festival. This huge annual music and culture festival actually takes place several miles away in Pilton. Glastonbury was built on a group of hills that rise from the Somerset Levels. In the times before the levels were drained Glastonbury was often an island and is still known as the Isle of Avalon. Glastonbury is shrouded in mystery and legend. A popular story is that the mythical King Arthur held court on the Isle of Avalon and is buried there along with his wife, Guinevere.
