Emsworth, a village at the top of the Chichester Harbour channel between the South Downs and sea close to Chichester and Portsmouth, has a strong fishing, sailing and boat building heritage. Famous for its oysters in the 19th century which were sent to all the best hotels and restaurants in London by train, Emsworth, twinned with St Aubin-sur-Mer, Normandy, is also renowned for its breweries and its food festival, the 5th largest in the UK, attracting over 50,000 every September. The village, historic home of writer PG Woodhouse, with a busy harbourside, has a strong community feel with Georgian architecture and 17th century fishermen’s cottages on its narrow streets, seven excellent restaurants, eight pubs, five cafés, schools and churches.
