There's a special welcome for visitors in Deal, whose town motto translates as "Befriend The Stranger". A delightful seaside centre which has resisted commercialisation, it charms the eye in every direction, from the pebble beach, pier, fishing boats and promenade to the castle, the narrow streets and alleyways, and the crowded buildings of differing styles and ages, many dating back to the 1800s. Deal has bags of history, most romantically that of the smugglers whose underground tunnels sometimes surfaced at local churches.
