Craigavon was established as a new town in the 1960s, intending to absorb the existing settlements of Lurgan and Portadown. Since then, the two original towns have maintained their own identities, and Craigavon now generally refers to the residential area stretching between them. However, in one way especially, Craigavon has been a massive success: its wide open spaces offer indoor and outdoor entertainments galore. Families flock to watch the demonstrations at Ballydougan Pottery, pet the animals at Tannaghmore Gardens, take to Craigavon Golf Ski Centre's artificial ski slope, snap photos of the wildlife at Oxford Island and Portmore Lough nature reserves, sail to Coney Island or around the nearby Lough Neagh, play tenpin bowling at Centre Point Bowl, make waves at Cascades Leisure Centre, or follow a Treasure Trail, with the chance of winning a nice cash prize.
