The first thing you notice when you arrive at Conwy in North Wales is the mediaeval Castle dominating the town. It stands proud and defiant on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Conwy Estuary, built in the reign of Edward I and once described as “the most magnificent of Edward I's Welsh fortresses†; when you see it you have to admit he wasn’t wrong. Conwy therefore is the classic walled town, some three quarters of a mile long and with 22 towers it is that impressive. Conwy is steeped in history, located at the head of the Conwy Valley the town has narrow cobbled streets, and plenty of old buildings indicative of its past.
