Chollerford is located at the crossing of the Military Road and Hadrian’s Wall, over the river Tyne and close to the remains of the important Roman Chester Fort. Chollerford Bridge is the first bridge on the North Tyne. It is a stone bridge built to replace the original medieval one, built in 1394 but later destroyed in the flood of 1771. The site is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade II Listed Building protected by law. The Military Road, the local name for the B6318, was built eight years after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 to provide easier movement of troops between Carlisle and Newcastle, engineered by Robert Mylne.
