The village of Charlton Marshall has a population of a little over 1,000 and lies in the northern part of Dorset, two miles to the south of the market town of Blandford Forum. The village is situated on the River Stour and lies along the A350 road. Until 1956, it was served by a branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. Many parts of the local church of St Mary are medieval, including most of its tower and northern aisle. The rest was mainly rebuilt in the 18th century. The work was mostly done at the expense of Dr Charles Sloper, who is likely to have used the Bastard brothers John and William as architects for the project.
