Castleside is a small village situated two miles south west of Consett and a mile south of the river Derwent. Located in the parish of Lanchester, the village centre is located on the main A68 road, which runs between Edinburgh and Darlington with the village crossroads allowing easy access to Consett, the North Pennines and Stanhope. A possible explanation of where its name is derived is from a farmhouse, built in 1773 in the enclosure of common land in Lanchester Parish, which was let to a tenant by the name of Castle, with an eminence near the farm, which became known as Castle’s Hill.
