Castle Cary is a popular small Somerset town built of the local 'Ham' stone which gives the town's buildings their lovely golden colour. A 12th century castle that was built on the hill behind the town, now long gone, gave the town its name. The village is on the main West of England railway between Penzance and London Paddington, which has made it quite a popular choice for those seeking to combine working in London with life in the countryside. Partly because of this commuter population and their cultured tastes, the town has a wide range of specialist shops that include high quality grocers, a thriving art gallery, delicatessens, cafes and restaurants.
