Carrickfergus, the oldest town in County Antrim, is located on the northern shore of Belfast Lough and dominated by a magnificent 12th Century castle. Built by John de Courcy, this is one of Ireland's best-preserved Norman fortresses, and visitors are invited inside to soak up centuries of history and meet the resident life-size models of noblemen and guards. Carrickfergus wears its past proudly. St Nicholas's Church dates back to 1182, and local artefacts from as far back as the Medieval era are on display at Carrickfergus Museum.
