This ancient market town straddles the River Avon and owes its existence to the river. The settlement was established there over 2500 years ago. The name Bradford is said to have been derived from 'Broad Ford' as it the river was forded at the point now marked by the Town Bridge, one of Bradford-on-Avon's principle attractions. The Normans built the first stone bridge here, possibly replacing an earlier wooden structure. However, the Normans didn't add a parapet and people kept falling off the bridge into the river! The bridge was later widened by the addition of a further stone structure alongside it.
