The village of Billingshurst straddles the old Roman road of Stane Street that ran from Chichester to London, now part of the A29, although the modern road by-passes the village to the west. There is no direct evidence that there was a Roman settlement in the area although there some Roman bricks in the walls of St.Mary`s church. In the 16th - 17th centuries Billingshurst was on the edge of the Sussex Glass making industry, there was a glass furnace at Wanborough Green three miles to the west.
