Amesbury nestles in a curve of the River Avon six miles north of Salisbury and is well served by hotels and guest houses. A little West along the A303 is Stonehenge. More evidence of pre-historic activity is found within walking distance from the town at the Neolithic earthworks of Woodhenge which pre-dates Stonehenge. It once contained a wooden circle, now marked by concrete posts. Another historic attraction, also of wood, sits a little to the west of the town straddling the Amesbury bypass.
